Flaring Incident at the Motiva Norco facility

May 13, 2004 – (Norco, LA) – At 2:26 this afternoon, the Motiva Norco Refinery’s Catalytic Cracking Unit wet gas compressor tripped as a result of routine testing of the protective instrumentation system. The wet gas compressor takes light gases from the Cat Cracker and sends it to other equipment for further processing.

As a result of the compressor tripping, intermittent flaring and smoke will be evident. However, the flaring and smoke will subside over the next couple of hours.

Motiva operations personnel are implementing procedures to get the unit back to normal operating status.
