August 11, 2001 (Norco, LA) - Safety is obviously on everyone's minds, in light of the recent presumed terrorist attacks on Washington, D.C. and New York City. Placing safety first is not only a priority of the community, it's also Motiva Norco Refining's top priority, which is why we have taken what we believe are necessary precautions as a result of the attacks.
"We have stepped up our security at the refinery, though we are not able to discuss specifically what security measures have been taken. We have a plan in place for situations such as this and we are working according to that plan at this time," said External Affairs Manager Kimberly Windon.
Motiva has decided to allow some of its employees not directly associated with operations to leave work early, if they choose. This decision was not based on safety reasons, rather we recognize that our employees' emotions are strained at present, their minds are with the many victims and families of today's tragic events, and that for many, leaving now to be with family and loved ones is important.
"We do not feel any physical threat at Norco at this time. No information or data has us believe in any way that we are a target of any terrorist activity. However, we have and will continue to take additional security measures to protect our employees, our assets, and our neighbors," said Motiva Norco Refinery Manager Allen Kirkley.
Motiva employees are expected to return for a normal workday on Wednesday.
