Motiva Employees Reach Safety Milestone

365 Days And Counting
Motiva Employees Reach Safety Milestone

Working safely is a 24-hour a day responsibility for Motiva Norco Refining employees who recently achieved one-year with no lost time injuries.  More than 700 Motiva Norco employees worked 365 days with no Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incidents on April 11. The significant safety milestone represents more than 1,468,317 consecutive safe work hours.

The achievement reflects a strong commitment from the workforce to protect themselves and their co-workers as well as the surrounding community. "Our focus on safety at all levels and in all areas of the refinery are key to the successful safety record," said Motiva Norco Site Manager Anne-Marie Ainsworth. She noted daily safety reminders, continual training and awareness programs, such as the site's Safety Ba'You campaign, contribute to the outstanding safety performance.

Additionally, Motiva Norco recently enhanced its safety performance by partnering with the United Steel Workers (USW) Union to implement in the Triangle of Prevention Program (TOP). Initiated by the USW, TOP is a comprehensive safety-oriented program addressing real workplace situations to produce change. The program applies Systems of Safety concepts to practical real-life operations at the workplace to identify root causes and correct specific problems by asking and answering, "What caused or allowed an event to happen?" Most importantly, TOP tracks and measures constructive, positive change in the work place through lessons learned, educational sessions and extensive employee participation.

All Motiva employees are participating in an eight-hour workshop to introduce them to the basic elements of TOP, the Systems of Safety approach and the fundamentals of incident investigation. Site incident investigators take part in additional, extensive training.

"Maintaining a safe work environment at Norco is one of our most important goals," Ainsworth emphasized. "It takes individual dedication and team effort to work safely every day. As we celebrate our one-year OSHA recordable milestone, we also reinforce our safety pledge."
